Abstract
Optimal control with preview is investigated for a quarter-car, two-degree-of-freedom vehicle model, with a quadratic and quartic cost function. By solving a set of Euler-Lagrange equations, an optimization algorithm is derived to find the optimal control assuming complete knowledge of the disturbance (infinite time preview). The results give us merely an upper bound on the performance when using preview control, but suggest that nonlinear finite time preview controllers can contribute to substantial improvements in vehicle ride and/or handling performance
