Abstract :
The authors develop a clear definition of a distributed decision support system (DDSS), and explore design issues related to the DDSS from an organizational perspective. Based on the premise that the options available for designing a DDSS depend upon whether it is aligned with the organizational structure or not, the authors contend that DDSS design choices lie in a continuum between rigidity and flexibility. By delineating the characteristics of DDSS design alternatives, they suggest that the appropriate design for a specific DDSS is contingent upon a number of factors, including the organizational, environmental, and task characteristics
