Abstract :
A visual communication system for power- and bandwidth-limited channels, which gracefully degrades as the channel deteriorates is presented. The system is based on joint optimization of subband coding and 81-QAM through robust mappings between the source coder space and the modulation space. A novel definition for measuring system efficiency, based on a comparison to pure analog transmission, is used to evaluate the proposed system. The ideas presented in this paper can be used for terrestrial digital TV broadcasting or mobile communications
