Abstract :
Optimization techniques developed for object-oriented databases are defined and analyzed. The approach is based on incorporating redundancy into the object base. The redundancy is entirely controlled by the system. The access support relations technique is based on redundantly maintaining frequently traversed object paths. The function materialization technique is founded on precomputing performance critical functions. In both cases, the redundantly maintained information can be viewed as an index to accelerate object base queries. The use of these optimization approaches is discussed for two applications from the area of organizational data modeling
