  • Abstract
Summary form only given, as follows. The Pulsed Power Group at Loughborough University is presently investigating the possibility of producing twin series of high-voltage pulses from the single discharge of a capacitor into an array of exploding metallic fuses. A low-energy prototype generator based on exploding foils has been designed and constructed, and shown to function close to the performance specification. It is capable of producing, on a 6 kOhm load at each output, either three 150 kV pulses, two 200 kV pulses or a single 300 kV pulse. A high-energy generator using exploding foils is now being produced, intended to provide the same voltage pulses on 50 Ohm to 100 Ohm loads. In addition to describing how the exploding wire array is designed, the paper will detail the other ancillary equipment that is involved. This includes the compact air-cored twin-secondary transformer with coupling coefficients of 0.9 that provides the twin series of output pulses at the required voltage. It is anticipated that the paper will include experimental results from the high-energy generator.
