  • Abstract
An analysis is made of the bit error probability of the encrypted channel in the Ku-band single-access return link of the Space Station Freedom (SSF), and it is compared with the bit error probability of the channel without encryption. At 10-5 bit error probability (BER), encryption degradation for an uncoded channel is 1.4 dB. Adding Reed-Solomon coding would improve the 10-5 BER to 10-36, and encryption degradation would be negligible
