Abstract
Summary form only given. In this study, we have examined the dynamic pulse evolution to the steady state in a passively mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser with intracavity saturable dye absorber. The present study reveals the role of various mode-locking mechanisms at a given stage of pulse evolution. In particular, we are able to measure, for the first time to our knowledge, the pulse-shortening speed, Sp, defined as the fractional change in pulse duration per pass, as the pulse evolved
