Abstract :
Wavelet coding has been shown to be better than DCT coding. This method outperforms the DCT JPEG codec and moreover allows scalability. The 2D DWT can be easily extended to 3D and thus applied to video coding. However 3D subband coding of video suffers from two drawbacks. The first one is the memory complexity required for coding 3D blocks. The second one is the lack of temporal quality resulting in temporal blocking artifacts or flickering when the DWT is performed on temporal blocks. We propose a new temporal scan-based wavelet transform method for video coding combining the usual advantages of wavelet coding (performance, scalability), with acceptable reduced memory requirements and no additional CPU complexity
