Abstract :
In this paper, a concept of a frame mode bearer service (FMBS) for feasible integration into the GSM system is proposed and analysed. First, the framework of such a service is explained in view of GSM phase 2+ development and the intended introduction of a general packet radio service. Then, protocol stacks proposed for both signalling and data transfer are introduced. Emphasis is put on modifications required at the signalling plane in order to be able to support fast call-setup and virtual connections and on the logical link control layer protocol LAPF m used for data transfer. Thereafter, the formal SDL specification of the concept is illustrated before the simulation environment developed for performance evaluation is presented and valuable simulation results are discussed. Finally conclusions are drawn about the suitability of an FMBS for packet oriented (voice and) data transmission in GSM
