Abstract :
The authors present the results of a study of cost versus survivability for several survivable network architectures applied to the projected interoffice transmission needs of a single metropolitan area. Using present technology for example, one-to-one automatic protection switching, with diverse routing is considered to offer an attractive increase in network survivability for a moderate increase in capital costs. Using estimated costs for future technology, self-healing rings are seen to decrease costs and further increase survivability, but they would probably be augmented by fiber-optic systems using one-to-one protection switching with and without diverse routing.<>
