Abstract
A motor drive system comprising a pulse-width modulation (PWM) voltage source inverter feeding a shunt capacitor compensated induction motor is analyzed to ascertain how shunt capacitor compensation improves motor waveform quality and steady-state characteristics. The motor performances under balanced and two fault conditions (motor phase `a´ open and capacitor phase `a´ open) are modeled and compared by simulation and some experimental results. Comparative results show that properly chosen shunt capacitors are effective in eliminating high frequency motor voltage and currents and some of the pulsating torque components
