Abstract
Network traffic and accumulated digital contents have grown beyond the early expectations. In my talk, recent advances in optical communications and networking aimed at meeting the capacity demands are described. Moreover, the important roles of the leading edge photonic technologies in addressing the environmental issues in Japan are discussed with the focus on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
