Abstract
A smart antenna system formed by a circular array of 7 monopoles with one active central element surrounded by a concentric ring of 6 passive elements is investigated. Originally, 3 peripheral elements are short circuited and 3 are open circuited to obtain beams in 6 different directions. Here, reactive loads are being used to improve the resolution of a smart antenna´s beam steering. With the introduction of reactive loading, the array is able to steer its beam in 36 different directions. Increased gain of at least 0.5 dB is also noted.
