Abstract
In this paper, we have conducted finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) numerical experiments and supporting analyses demonstrating that the spectral dependence of the total scattering cross-section of randomly inhomogeneous dielectric spheres, of size in the resonant range, closely resembles that of their homogeneous counterparts having a volume-averaged refractive index. This holds even for the extreme case where the index of refraction within the inhomogeneous sphere varies randomly over the range from 1.0 to 2.0 and internal inhomogeneities span up to 0.4 dielectric wavelength.
