Abstract
This paper discusses the place, role and importance of informatics education in contemporary society. The levels of computer science education are analyzed and explained, from elementary computer literacy, which is the basic requirement for the age of knowledge, to the education of professional IT experts. Implementation of computers in education, as a significant factor of educational development at all levels and areas of society was particularly emphasized. Some important clues for the future development and application of informatics are featured, together with its impact on the overall development of Croatian society.
