Abstract :
To design and test real-time control loops of a satellite radio link, it is necessary, however, to know rain attenuation dynamics, i.e., rain attenuation time series. Unfortunately experimental rain attenuation time series are not always available to system designers, and often they exist only for specific sites, frequencies and elevations, and their scaling to other sites is not straight. An alternative to using real data collected from expensive propagation experiments is to generate synthetic rain attenuation time-series with mathematical statistical models, which, of course, must be tested for their reliable use at any site of interest. The aim of this paper is to present statistics and models of experimental rain attenuation useful to test and validate artificial rain attenuation time series generated by mathematical synthesizers.
