Abstract :
This paper presents the effective use of a unified power flow controller (UPFC) and its characteristics in a computational approach. To demonstrate the flexibility of UPFC in controlling line flow transmission, a 5-bus network system is developed with line(s) congestion and operated as per-normal flow to identify the cause of line congestion and also possible solutions in mitigating the congestion with UPFC, effectively. The programs used in this study are power world simulator (PWS) and power system analysis toolbox (PSAT). The use of PSAT is reported and discussed along with its requirements of operation and its newly developed features. The embedment of UPFC in PSAT using Matlab as platform applicator to solve line congestion in steady-state condition is also explained. The use of UPFC in network planning of rural electrification is proposed at the end of the paper
