  • Abstract
Laser welding enables new designing prospects of highly effective electrical machines. This paper presents fundamental investigations concerning the weldability of electrical steel, and an approach for the mechanical characterization of the weld seam. Through an integrated view of the independent variables: process, design and material, the limits of weldability could be expanded. Moreover a significant increase in material strength due to the laser welding process is shown. These perceptions provide fundamental insight for the design of weld seams on electrical steel laminations.
