Abstract :
Barr and Stroud Ltd was founded in 1888. The Glasgow based company specialised first in the invention, development and manufacture of optical rangefinders. By 1917 the company had established itself as Britain´s leading manufacturer of precision optical instruments when it added submarine periscopes to it´s growing range of products, which now include sophisticated thermal imagers and laser rangefinders. The company is now at the forefront of electro-optical technology, playing a key role in Western defence. The background to the company is discussed as well as the business strategy for the 1990s. Strategy implementation is also discussed with particular reference to CIM and MRPII. The impact of the strategy is discussed
