Abstract
The deterioration level of internal components of high voltage transformers can be inferred by the analysis of specific gases found dissolved in the insulating oil of the transformer. In this work, we have employed harmonic detection of spectral lines using DFB diode lasers, to implement a continuous surveillance system for trace gas detection as a route to transformer fault diagnosis. A detailed study was developed toward sensor optimization by using C2H2 as a model target molecule. A novel design is proposed for field operation to allow specific gas monitoring of insulating oils of high-voltage transformers.
