Abstract
Until 2011 Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) had no Gas Insulated Substations (GIS) in service. In 2013 PSE&G energized the Bergen Switching Station, the largest GIS in North America with 80 kA short circuit breaking capability. Tracing the history of Bergen Switching Station, this paper describes the decision making process for a GIS solution and provides technical details of the high performance GIS being used.
