Abstract
NTT has developed compact multichannel optical modules that can transmit or receive twelve-channel 10-Gbps signals through 150-meter-long OM3 multimode fibers without errors. These novel optical modules employ new small sagged fiber (SF) optical connector plugs that provide a low connection loss between multimode fibers and surface illuminated semiconductor devices, which can be either VCSEL arrays or PD arrays. The result is a low power dissipation of less than 2 W and footprint downsizing. Moreover, our optical modules feature mechanical turning functions in an SF optical connector receptacle that make it easy to connect or disconnect optical patch cords and optical modules on a printed circuit board (PCB).
