Abstract :
This paper proposes and discussed our evaluations of the traffic shaping function incorporated into Fiber Delay Line (FDL) buffers. In Multi-Wavelength Optical Packet Switching (MW-OPS), trunk transmission bandwidth of every network section must be unified to avoid the use of costly format-conversion hardware. Traffic shaping at low traffic sections can reduce loss rate at bottlenecks since packet arrivals become rather constant. FDL buffers with longer common difference of arithmetic-series length can perform the shaping function and enhance network throughput, even though FDL buffer can only provide a discrete amount of delay time and limited buffering capacity. Moreover, this paper evaluates the effectiveness of proposal under various network conditions and the method of self control to achieve the quasi-optimal shaping parameter.
