  • Abstract
Only three options for control of mercury and organic compounds were available to cement kilns when the latest revisions to the Portland Cement Manufacturing Industry Maximum Achievable Control Technology standards were considered. Since then, Albemarle has developed a technique whereby the existing kiln particulate control device can be used in conjunction with a temperature insensitive, concrete-friendly sorbent, C-PAC™, to provide capture of mercury and organics so that they can be removed from the system and provide a sink for these pollutants. This technique is unique to the cement industry. The CKD material removed from the system can be reused in cement products rather than disposed in a landfill. The technique has been tested at four cement kilns. The temperature-insensitive, concrete-friendly sorbent is a gas-phase brominated powdered activated carbon (PAC).
