  • Abstract
A description is given of VectorNet, a very-high-performance token-ring network that transfers data between network nodes at what is essentially a memory backplane data-transfer rate of 1.4 Gb/s (178 Mb/s). This data-transfer rate can be provided over fiber-optic or copper media, and both types of media can be used in the same VectorNet ring. Each node is provided with a high-speed protocol processor to minimize the overhead associated with transferring data between network nodes. Several types of VectorNet nodes exist to provide flexible configurations of very high-performance networked systems. VectorNet has been designed to allow easy connection of host computing equipment, enabling this equipment to directly benefit from the high data-transfer rate it provides.<>
