Abstract :
Summary form only given. The Naval Surface Warfare Center has completed the design of a helix-loaded cusptron experiment. The amplifier targets high-power operation in the 2-5 GHz range. Two design geometries, characterized by either an axis encircling or a nonaxis encircling beam have been compared under the constraints of design viability and equipment availability. Numerical studies of beam and RF parameters in both the compression and interaction regions have been obtained. The magnetic field contour necessary to compress the cusp-injected beam while maintaining required electrical characteristics has been identified. The final design includes studies of the linear gain, device bandwidth and beam dynamics, as well as the physical layout including vacuum and diagnostic systems.
