Abstract
Mobility is one of the major features of wireless communication systems. In Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) All-IP networks, two new approaches to support real-time relocation of Serving Radio Network Controller (SRNC) were introduced by 3GPP TR 25.936. Both of these approaches duplicate packets during the relocation process, which consumes extra resources and also some packets may be lost. Afterward, another new approach Fast SRNC Relocation (FSR) was proposed to support real-time relocation without packet duplication. However, this later approach may also loose some packets during the SRNC relocation process. In this paper, we propose a new technique called Lossless FSR (LFSR) in which we show that there will be no loss of packets and it will not require extra signaling. The same signaling as in FSR has been used with a different architecture to avoid packet loss at the source Radio Network Controller (RNC). Similarly, as in FSR, the LFSR uses a buffering mechanism to avoid packet loss at the target RNC.
