Abstract :
Recently, waterfront areas have come to be utilized more and more by an increasing number of peoples for various purposes. Accompanying this change, various environmental problems inherent to waterfronts have surfaced in terms of the possibility of human activities in such areas, their habitability, and comfort levels in relation to humans. They are sometimes characterized as national territory of a third kind, differing from both inland and marine territories and possessing unique characteristics combining those of land and sea. There exists, however, no clear technical definition for such areas in the field of engineering. Consequently, field measurements of various sea and weather conditions and of sea-salt particles floating in the air were conducted in various types of waterfronts, such as natural, artificial, and protection forest coast areas, to obtain basic data for waterfronts. These measurements are compared, and characteristics of each are discussed in this paper
