Abstract :
Quantifying sonar backscatter generally requires a calibrated system. The principles of active sonar calibration by standard target are reviewed for the case of a narrowband echo sounder. This is illustrated for a particular system, the Simrad EK500/18-kHz scientific echo sounder. The principal dependence of target strength on medium sound speed for the design sphere of pure electrolytic copper with diameter 64 mm is described
