Abstract :
Summary form only given. Manganese doped YAlO/sub 3/ is a promising material for holographic recording and optical data storage. The recorded holographic grating has high diffraction efficiency, cannot be disturbed by red or infrared reading light, does not require any fixation, has very long life time at room temperature, and can be easily erased at >250/spl deg/C. The photoinduced change of the refraction index accompanies the change in the color, yellowish to bluish-grayish, which we explain by photoionization Mn/sup 4+//spl rarr/Mn/sup 5+/. We experimentally studied photocoloration and thermobleaching of Mn:YAlO/sub 3/ and developed the model describing the balance of valence states in Mn:YAlO/sub 3/.
