Abstract
In this paper we propose an opportunistic access procedure in an OFDMA-based femtocell scenario. The procedure allows the femtocells to provide its users with higher data rate by accessing the unused sub-channels of the macrocells. It is based on combining information from the overall system architecture with side information used to detect the unused sub-channels. The proposed procedure is compatible with Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard, and provides a 20-26% increase in user data rates in our evaluation scenarios.
