Abstract
The matrix eigenvalue problem resulting from the finite-difference analysis of waveguides is treated using the power method. The method does not require prior estimate of the eigenvalue and demands minimum computer storage. The rapidity of convergence is demonstrated and methods to accelerate the convergence are presented. The advantages of the method compared to direct and other iterative approaches are discussed. The reduction of some design criterion to forms which can be treated by the method is also presented.
