Abstract :
Single-carrier modulation technique has been adopted by the fourth generation mobile wireless communication system as a special form known as single-carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) for uplink transmission, mainly due to its signal lower peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) than that of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). Since a user terminal is mostly operated by battery, power consumption is of primary importance. Considering the fact that the most of the supplied power is consumed by the power amplifier and it increases if the signal has higher PAPR, the use of PAPR reduction even for SC-FDMA system may further improve battery life of user terminal. In this paper, by a novel modification the peak power reduction technique based on the trellis shaping developed for conventional single-carrier modulation, we demonstrate that significant PAPR reduction can be achieved for SC-FDMA signals.
