Abstract :
From the aspect of the human visual system (HVS), the wavelet based image compression algorithm is analyzed first. A conclusion is drawn that such algorithm has an inherent defect when used for the images with rich details, such as remote sensing city images. A different kind of image compression algorithm based on spatial structure description is introduced and proved which is superior to wavelet based one on reserving image details. The compression result is more conform to the human visual system.
