Abstract :
Improvements in type-II "W" midwave-infrared lasers have led to an internal loss of <3 cm/sup -1/, a Shockley-Read lifetime of >20 ns at 78 K, and photonic-crystal distributed-feedback devices with etendue within 8/spl times/DL for 600-/spl mu/m-wide stripes.
