  • Abstract
A new channel model for intervehicle radio links, including the reflection from the road surface as well as the traditional multipath effects, is presented. Of particular interest is the vehicle-to-vehicle geometry and its influence on link performance. Due to the small antenna heights, the incidence angle to the road is around 90°, and, hence, the road behaves like a mirror. Therefore, destructive interference causes deep fades at distinct distances. The antenna height fluctuations due to the rough pavement have a major impact on the channel behavior, as the roughness is on the order of the wavelength (5 mm). The probability density function of the combined two-path and Rice-model shows that this new model allows a more realistic description of the channel with a better set of parameters. Compared to the Rice/Rayleigh-log-normal density with five parameters, this model gives just as good a fit to measured data for line-of-sight conditions with only two parameters, i.e., the Rice factor and the variance of the antenna height fluctuation. A block diagram of the complete channel model is given
