Abstract
This paper introduces some of the issues arising in ILC from the point of view of the research group at Sheffield University and presents a new general theoretical approach to parameter optimal ILC using linear parameterizations of bilinear update laws. Starting from a simple example, it is shown that monotonicity of the error norm and the existence of non-trivial limit sets are typical of such an approach.
