Abstract
In this paper, we describe how to automatically translate e-learning flow-oriented activity sequences into rule-based designs, such as those supported by the ldquode-factordquo e-learning modeling standard: the IMS learning design specification. Our aim is that instructors model their educational designs using a user-friendly visual notation. Then these designs can be automatically exported into standardized and interoperable representations, which can be interchanged with / deployed in a plethora of heterogeneous learning management systems and tools. This approach has been implemented in e-LD, an authoring system which supports the authoring and refactoring of IMS learning designs using a flow-oriented visual syntax.
