Abstract :
The paper examines the predicted reliability of SONET rings in the feeder as a function of various parameters. Markov models are used to calculate service downtime according to the number of nodes on the ring, failure rates, repair times, etc. These, in turn, are compared to the predicted reliability of a copper-based point-to-point feeder architecture. The results demonstrate the improvements in service reliability and availability that have been made possible by fiber optic systems
