Abstract
Preventive diagnostic testing of underground cables serves to improve power system reliability and offers information that leads to the selection of the most economic alternative between repair, rehabilitation and replacement. In industrial plants, it reduces the risk of costly process interruptions. This presentation describes the modern diagnostic test methods available in each of the following three categories: withstand testing; global condition assessment; and identification of discrete defects by partial discharge location. Following a brief description of the methods, the advantages and limitations of the various tests are discussed
