  • Abstract
Creating assignments that give each student in my technical communication classes the best possible chance to do well is a constant concern. One success has been achieved through the use of props as assignment starters. Bringing to class props appropriate for a goal-i.e., sample documents for introducing and analyzing information design, a tool for technical description, a visit to a shop class to observe a procedure for explaining a process-generates discussion, analysis, teamwork, terminology, problem solving, planning, and strategy building. From student involvement with the props, students produce assignments. The end result is improved student performance. My paper briefly describes how I came to this idea of using props, how I implement the idea in the classroom, and the advantages of using the approach
