Abstract
Summary form only given, as follows. Summary form only given. A five-section W-band gyrotwystron amplifier was recently constructed and demonstrated at CPI. The gyrotwystron is comprised of an input cavity, three heavily-stagger-tuned buncher cavities, and a traveling-wave output section, all operating in the TEO, mode near the fundamental cyclotron frequency. Two well-benchmarked, nonlinear simulation codes, MACY and MAGYKL, were used to design the interaction circuit. Using the design codes, an extensive theoretical optimization was performed to determine the circuit performance versus variations in circuit and beam parameters. The gyrotwystron was constructed and testing began in the Summer of 2002. The measured performance of the gyrotwystron amplifier showed a significant improvement in bandwidth over previously demonstrated W-band gyro-amplifiers. Details of the design and measured performance are presented.
