Abstract
Summary form only given, as follows. The surface nitrided alloy has been subjected to a number of characterisation techniques in order to characterise the nitrided surface. Surface microhardness measurements have been carried out to evaluate the effect of processing parameters. The phase analysis of the layers was carried out using XRD Pin on disc wear measurements of the nitrided alloys were carried out against UHMWPE. The wear rate was determined from the weight loss and coefficient of friction. The morphology and composition of the wear debris were characterised using scanning electron microscopy and EDAX. The results are discussed.
