Abstract :
This paper presents a fuzzy logic controller for an adaptive traffic management system. Conventional traffic controllers operate either in a fixed mode or a non-fixed mode. However these schemes are inadequate for an intersection with variable traffic volumes. A new fuzzy logic controller with variables of arrival, queue, and traffic volume could alleviate traffic congestion and is therefore proposed. Traffic volume refers to the number of vehicles entering an intersection from other intersections by the second. The proposed method adaptively controls the cycle of traffic signals even though the traffic volume varies. The effectiveness of this method was shown through simulation of a single intersection. The experimental results show that the proposed fuzzy logic controller outperforms the existing controllers in terms of the number of passed vehicles, the average delay of vehicles, and the degree of saturation
