Abstract :
VTS (Vessel Traffic Services) have been implemented in France to manage and supervise ship displacements in local areas only. This does not favour a global view of the maritime traffic and the monitoring and recording of ship displacements for further analysis. This leads us to introduce and design a distributed GIS (Geographical Information Systems) that will act as a network-based system in charge of the federation of the different VTS systems, and that will support all the spatial database and analysis functions required.
