Abstract
It is shown that a finite difference method for numerically determining the propagation characteristics of optical waveguide devices can be extended to deal with structures containing complex refractive indices in a straightforward manner. The resulting complex finite difference method has been validated and its potential as a design tool demonstrated with studies of a silicon based p-i-n optical rib waveguide modulator and a semiconductor laser
