Abstract
This paper looks at known gaps between the existing performance, design and reliability of active photonics devices for space applications. Specifically it examines these performance, design and reliability gaps for high power multimode fiber-coupled pump lasers and single mode fiber-coupled pump lasers. Some mention will also be made regarding DFB lasers and high frequency fiber-coupled photodetectors. Existing commercial devices are compared, where possible, with the general requirements for space components.
