Abstract
Estimation of the carbon stock of tropical forest vegetation is very important for global change research. Estimation of the carbon stock of the forest vegetation with remote sensing and GIS was explored in Xishuangbanna autonomous prefecture, Yunnan province, P.R. of China. It includes five steps. Firstly, all of the data were referenced to the same projection and coordination. Secondly, the biomass of the forest fixed samples was calculated. Thirdly, the LANDSAT TM images were processed and a lot of indices were created from the LANDSAT TM images. Fourthly, the model of biomass estimation was formulated with the biomass of the forest fixed samples, corresponding GIS data and Landsat TM images. Finally, the biomass of the forest vegetation was calculated, and the carbon stock was calculated from the biomass
