Abstract :
This paper presents several practical phase-balancing schemes for a three-phase induction generator that operates an a single-phase power system. These schemes involve phase converters, which comprise only passive circuit elements, connected across the generator terminals. Power is delivered to the single-phase grid and/or dissipated in the phase-converter elements, while the generator enjoys the high efficiency of balanced three-phase operation. Using the method of symmetrical components, a steady-state performance analysis of the induction generator system is set forth and the conditions for achieving perfect phase balance are deduced. It is shown that the values of the circuit elements required are functions of the positive-sequence generator conductance and susceptance, while the resulting output power factor is a function of the positive sequence impedance angle. The theoretical analysis is verified by experiments performed on a 2 kW induction machine
