Abstract
Combining theoretical results from statistical mechanics with conventional numerical models of ocean circulation, one achieves substantial improvement in model fidelity without incurring the computational cost of eddy resolution. Global ocean modelling for climate studies becomes a desktop exercise, while regional studies (an example is reported from the western Mediterranean) exhibit striking skill
